Chennai, India
Young Phyllis’ journey to medical school.
In the heart of Chennai, a remarkable young woman named Phyllis is steadily rewriting what’s possible—not just for herself, but for her community.
Now in her third year at the Panimalar Medical College Hospital & Research Institute, Phyllis is studying to become a doctor—an almost unthinkable path for someone raised in one of the city's most underserved areas. Her parents, Arul and Regy, lead the SPAN Street Parliament in the Chennai slums, a grassroots initiative Flow Foundation proudly supports. That’s where we first met Phyllis, a bright-eyed nine-year-old already dreaming of helping others.
Phyllis’s passion for healthcare began early, shaped by a deep desire to serve the underprivileged in her community. But without financial support, her dream of studying medicine would have remained out of reach. University—and especially medical school—is a rarity for girls from her background.
Flow Foundation believed in her.
We committed to funding her full medical training—a six-year journey she’s now halfway through. With consistently excellent marks and a strong commitment to her studies, Phyllis is on track to make a real difference in the lives of others.
Her story is a reminder of what’s possible when we invest in the dreams of young people.
