Saving Lives at Whangamata Beach
Since 2016, Flow Foundation has proudly supported the Whangamata Surf Life Saving Club—an organisation that’s been keeping Kiwis safe in the surf since 1949. From volunteer patrols to full-time rescue operations, the club is a cornerstone of coastal safety, and Flow is honoured to help equip them with life-saving tools that make a real difference.
One of the most significant contributions came in 2017, when Flow Foundation funded the club’s first rescue jet ski—aptly named Stark Rescue in recognition of Flow founder Ray Stark. This wasn’t just a donation—it was a turning point for the club’s operations.
As Chief Lifeguard of the club puts it, “Stark Rescue remains our most valuable piece of rescue equipment. We are very fortunate to have such an exceptional asset on the beach.”
Rescue Water Craft (RWCs)—commonly referred to as jet skis—are purpose-built for lifesaving in surf conditions. Fast, agile and able to access areas other vehicles can’t, they enable trained surf lifeguards to reach people in trouble quickly, navigate rocky outcrops, and even assist in stabilising or towing stranded vessels.
Thanks to Flow’s ongoing support, the club has been able to replace Stark Rescue every two years, ensuring lifeguards always have a reliable, high-performing machine to respond to emergencies.
The impact is life-changing.
During the 2024/25 season, six people who otherwise may have lost their lives made it home to their families, and a further 14 were assisted to safety after finding themselves in dangerous situations. Lifeguards also performed 18 first aids—more than half of which were major incidents requiring ambulance support.
Club Captain Grace Westenberg notes in her end of season report, that while rescue numbers were less than previous years, this was due to a combination of mild weather, calmer seas, and the proactive, preventative actions of the highly trained rescue team.
Behind those numbers are countless moments where quick access to the right equipment made the difference between a close call and a tragedy.
We’re proud to back the Whangamata lifeguards in the incredible work they do—and proud to see Stark Rescue in action, year after year.
